Audiobook Auditions

Before “Time is a Fine White Lie”, I’d never put a proper book together. Now that I’m beginning the process of creating the audiobook version, I’m quickly getting up to speed on the ins and outs of that.

With a bit of counsel from voiceover pro / high school pal Greg Chun, I’ve begun seeking out perfect voices to read each of the very different short stories in my book. First up was the decision of whether to go with union or non-union voice actors. I settled on non-union for most of the stories, as they are only a few minutes long, and SAG-AFTRA requires a one-hour minimum. This doesn’t always make sense for me, as some of my stories takes only 3 or 4 minutes to read. I turned to Voices.com, a marketplace for both union and non-union readers.

I submitted a project there to find a reader for the introduction to the book. I entered in the audition text, which consisted of the first few paragraphs of the chapter.

Within 48 hours, I had 25 audio clips of freelance narrators reading my introduction. I must say, it’s pretty wild to hear my words read back to me by a wide array of professional and freelance voiceover artists. I can already see the audiobook is going to take these stories to a whole new level!

BREAKING NEWS: In addition to Greg Chun himself reading one of the stories in the book, Q101 personality / man-about-globe Tim Pogo has just signed on to read a story as well! Both these folks are amazing people with great voices, and I’m excited to hear where they take their parts of the project.

In the meantime, you can read “Time is a Fine White Lie” on Kindle. The e-book version will be available for all other devices on July 12th.
