Want It All: Video Creation #3

The phrase “want it all” made me think of the “Eat It All” ice cream cones. It was the one I preferred as a child when offered a plain or sugar cone at an ice cream shop, so I guess it stuck in my head. I liked the idea of Photoshopping it slightly and turning it into a chorus for the video. Starting with a photo of  the  original,  it was an easy matter to manipulate it to the image you see in the video. Adobe Photoshop is an impressive tool.

Knowing the song had two choruses, I had to think for a bit to come up with a second object on which I could put the song title. Eventually, I thought of Helen Gurley Brown’s book Having it All and, from there, the general aesthetic of 1970’s self-improvement books. They had a distinct vibe that I knew would be fun to replicate.

Searching for book jackets turned out to be a bit of a challenge, but after some digging, I eventually came across the image shown here. It’s not a self-help book, but the font – with its swoops and flourishes – matched what I had in my head.

I then found a nice picture of a dog-eared paperback and, just as with the ice-cream cone, removed the existing printing and put “Want it All” in its place. It wasn’t quite as easy as the ice cream cone, but it was still very doable. The technique is similar to that used by online shops to show you examples of t-shirts and posters that don’t yet exist.

We’ll be premiering the music video on Saturday, November 2nd at Nighthawk Chicago in the Albany Park neighborhood. Click here to add the event to your Google Calendar, or click here to RSVP on Facebook.

I used to have a problem. I always thought to get a great sounding recording, I had to be in a ‘real’ studio. It’s because
