Clothes of the Devil

Last Thursday my friend Zach came over to track acoustic guitar on my latest song, Clothes of the Devil. He’s better at finger-picking than I am, and I knew he would help contribute a folksy feel to the song.

I’m pretty sure it was Z’s first time recording to a click-track, and he performed his parts wonderfully. He took the guitar part in a different direction than I expected and it ended up much better than what I had in mind. These are the mechanics of collaboration, something I’m enjoying more and more these days.

A few months back, I sat at my kitchen table with my portable AKAI MKii keyboard, and wrote the music for the song (while half-watching Bosch on Amazon Prime). Usually I write in my studio proper, so this was a welcome departure.

In the following days, I began to write a set of lyrics about white privilege, and the song “Clothes of the Devil” was born. I think these are some of the best lyrics I’ve written in quite a while.

Clothes of the Devil is the last new song to go on my new album. As of today, I’m not starting any more new songs. Thanks again to Zach for his mad skillz, and I’m excited to see where this track goes. Stay tuned for updates!
