Behind The Notes: SANCTUARY

The song Sanctuary is the single from the Romance of the Spaceways cd which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Romance was the only album of mine that I pushed to commercial radio (as well as college) and this is the track that ended up most played.

The original title of the song was “Last Night on Earth”, and the literal action is about a select group of people secretly escaping Earth before a cataclysmic event. I think I was pretty lonely when I wrote this back in the early ‘aughts. It’s a hopeful song, and I can clearly see now that I was singing for myself to hear.

The computer ‘beeps’ at the very end of the song are from my Periodic Table of the Elements keyboard, sounding the equivalent pitches for a molecule of water. An H, and O, and an H.

The song received also airplay in Japan, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua, and was included on the Stomp Out Cancer benefit compilation. The Romance of the Spaceways album is available for free digital download throughout the month of November.
