The atmospheric rock of William Steffey has long been favored by this columnist. Steffey’s newest ensemble, Boolean Knife, often reminds me of Echo and The Bunnymen and The Smiths, but with more interesting songs. Not content to dwell in the treacly boy-meets-girl world, Boolean Knife’s EP is based on a dream Steffey had about a gigantic killer penguin.
‘Antarctica’ shimmers with chiming guitars, ‘Fifty North’ chugs with persistent intention, and ‘The Visitor’ evokes frozen images of loneliness. All are performed with musical depth that continuously surprises the ears and leaves you wanting two things: More tunes as good as these three and a second listen with a really nice pair of high-end headphones.
