The Celebrity Cafe: Romance of the Spaceways

William Steffey’s latest disc, Romance of the Spaceways, is a mess of watered-down rock tracks that all sound too similar to one another. Steffey attempts to create a 1980’s Pink Floyd kind of vibe, but ends up sounding more like a Weird Al Yankovic parody. The vocals are treated with an echo effect in practically every song, I believe to relax and romanticize the listener. It didn’t work for me. Romance is not a disc to fall in love with, however some of Steffey’s earlier work is much more enjoyable. Check out the Love Song for Kyrie Snow EP, released in 2005, for a better idea of what Steffey can do.
